3 Top Tips on Managing Apprentices

“Regular reviews; assign a buddy; and nurture them like they are going to stay with you long term.” - Pam Molyneux

1. Make sure you set regular reviews with your new apprentice and with the education partner - I would recommend monthly in the first year, invest in them, set the expectations, guide them along the way and it will pay off - if they are 18, don't treat them like you would your seasoned workers, they don't know the reality of the world of work the same

2. If you can assign them a buddy, someone who they can go to to ask questions, to check things out away from you or their manager - make sure that buddy is capable of coping with this responsibility

3.  Don't assume the education provider will do everything, nuture them like they are going to stay with you long term - give them the best experience, and even if they do leave, they will leave with a really good word to say about you and in return you get someone along the way that has done the job right, has learned that right tricks of the trade - if they do move on, you are doing right by the next employer and ultimately the industry
