“Costs associated with unhappy employees is turnover and replacing a member of staff; grievances; productivity..” - Pam Molyneux
One of the costs associated with unhappy employees is turnover and replacing a member of staff. It is hard to place a real tangible figure as there are so many associated elements with this – there will also be dependencies on the role:
· Your time to complete an exit interview and action plan how to make things better going forward
· Could a negative glass door review be left and if that happens, how much time does that take to manage the impact of this?
· Your time in managing internal communications with staff
· Your time in managing the impact of the news for colleagues staying that the colleague is leaving
· Your time to review the job description before it goes to ad
· Your time to place the ad or engage an agency
· Your time to review applications or deploy an agency to do this on your behalf
· Your time to interview or deploy an agency to do this on your behalf
· Your time to offer and complete onboarding activities
Could all of the above take a month (if you are lucky)?
· Your time to train the new colleague and the bedding in period and the loss of productivity during this time – in my experience, it can be a good 6 months for a new colleague to really be confident
Another cost associated with unhappy employees is grievances
· Your time in dealing with the grievance process
· Your time in managing internal communications and relationships with staff involved and impacted
· Your time in managing the impact of the grievance on productivity
· Your time in dealing with the action plan to improve the issues raised
· What happens if the complaint goes external to a tribunal?
· Could a negative glass door review be left and if that happens, how much time does that take to manage the impact of this?
Another cost of unhappy employees, is on productivity
Perkbox have reported that 61% of employees are disengaged and:
· Just 35% of employees rate their productivity as 'strong'
· 59% of employees wouldn't recommend their organisation as a good place to work
· Disengaged employees are four times more likely to leave their jobs
· There is then the costs associated of performance management around the employees affected
· Are staff having sick days? What are the costs associated with this?
· Are there costs associated with training and re-training needed?
· Are there costs associated with managing the performance of these staff?
