A strong employee becomes a manager
They were technically excellent
Reliable
Trusted
There was a gap
So they stepped up
But management is a different job
Suddenly they're expected to handle performance, conflict, difficult conversations, accountability and employee situations they may never have dealt with before
When things go wrong, businesses often conclude:
"They're not a very good manager."
But there is another question worth asking:
Did we actually give them a fair opportunity to become one?
Managers are responsible for their decisions and behaviour
But founders and senior leaders are responsible for creating the conditions in which managers can succeed
That means:
Clarity
Capability
Authority
Accountability
Support
Opportunities to exercise judgement
